A canal on Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. Hurricane Rita’s tidal surge washed away 1.4 million cubic yards of soil from the refuge’s 51-mile-long levee system, which protects the fresh water portions of the site from salt water infiltration from the Gulf of Mexico. FEMA obligated approximately $11.4 million in Public Assistance grant funding to repair the levee system.
