Region X Success Story
This page describes the success that resulted from leveraging a local event in Cordova, AK to engage with residents and raise awareness about tsunami and earthquake risk. It is intended for FEMA staff, along with state and community officials, mitigation and urban planners, and other individuals interested in how the Risk MAP program and project cycle can benefit their community by addressing the issues the community cares about the most.
After learning through Discovery that city officials in Cordova, AK wanted a better understanding of their earthquake and tsunami risk, FEMA Region X provided tsunami inundation maps and evacuation route information. To help raise awareness about the risk among community members, FEMA regional staff worked with local and state partners to provide information and host preparedness-themed activities at an annual local event, engaging with residents to help them better understand their risk.
