Since the federal disaster declaration for Tropical Storm Fred, Buncombe County residents have received more than $1.62 million in federal funds as of Oct. 6, 2021:

  • $392,879 in FEMA grants to homeowners and renters.
  • $1.17 million in claims paid to National Flood Insurance Program policyholders.
  • $57,500 in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans approved for homeowners, renters and businesses.

Individual Assistance in Buncombe County:

  • 138 homeowners and renters have been approved for $392,879 in federal grants through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program. This includes:
  • $367,321 in Housing Assistance grants for home repair, home replacement, and/or rental assistance.
  • $25,558 in Other Needs Assistance grants to replace essential household items and for other critical disaster-related costs.
  • 50 homeowners and renters have been approved for rental assistance.
  • 529 home inspections issued; 431 completed.
  • Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA) visited 261 households in Buncombe County.
  • A Document Drop-off Center operated until Oct. 2 to help survivors with registration, application updates and referrals.
  • IA Assistance in Asheville:

  • 35 homeowners and renters have been approved for $146,885 in federal grants through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program. This includes:
    • $143,955 in Housing Assistance grants for home repair, home replacement, and/or rental assistance.
    • $2,930 in Other Needs Assistance grants to replace essential household items and for other critical disaster-related costs.
  • 19 homeowners and renters have been approved for rental assistance. 
  • IA Assistance in Candler:

  • 45 homeowners and renters have been approved for $149,353 in federal grants through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program. This includes:
    • $132,785 in Housing Assistance grants for home repair, home replacement, and/or rental assistance.
    • $16,568 in Other Needs Assistance grants to replace essential household items and for other critical disaster-related costs.
  • 19 homeowners and renters have been approved for rental assistance. ·

U.S. Small Business Administration:

  • SBA is operating a Business Recovery Center at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, 1465 Sand Hill Rd., Suite 1054, Candler, NC 28715. Hours are Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday. SBA has approved $57,500 in low-interest disaster loans to 4 applicants.

National Flood Insurance Program:

  • NFIP has paid $1.17 million to policyholders who filed claims.

Public Assistance:

  • Buncombe County was approved for assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures and permanent work Sept. 8, 2021.
  • To date, 4 Requests for Public Assistance (RPAs) have been received and 4 approved.
  • The state has held applicant briefings.
