National Level Exercise 2022

National Level Exercise (NLE) 2022 will examine the ability of all levels of government, private industry, and NGOs to respond to and recover from a large rupture along the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) fault line that runs along the Pacific coastal states. The scenario includes subsequent tsunamis, aftershocks, and a spill of national significance (SONS) caused by the initial disaster. 

Events will span the entire 2022 calendar year and include webinars, seminars, workshops, tabletop exercises (TTX), and Senior Officials Exercises (SOE). All NLE 2022 engagements have alignment with the five NLE 2022 objectives and associated focus areas, and with several engagements being connected and building upon one another. Through this series of targeted events, NLE 2022 will engage federal, state, local, and tribal governments as well as the private sector and non-governmental organizations to enhance our nation’s preparedness. Participation in engagements will vary based on the topic and partners that would be needed in a real-world response.

Five national-level objectives guide the development of all NLE 2022 engagements and serve as the structure for evaluation of NLE 2022.

NLE 2022 will incorporate a series of engagements that will promote deliberate participation by whole community partners, including federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial government senior leaders with equities, roles, and/or responsibilities in catastrophic disaster response and recovery, as well as private sector, non-governmental and international partners. Senior leadership engagement, to include Senior Officials Exercises, is expected throughout NLE 2022 with Departments and Agencies participating as they would in real-world events.

The purpose of the NLE 2022 Placemat is to provide a brief overview of the exercise purpose, scenario and scheduled engagements. Exercise participants are encouraged to check this site often to keep up with scheduled events and discussion threads related to NLE 2022.
