Theo is a 12th grade student who brings an interest in fire safety and firefighting to the YPC. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as his school shifted to virtual learning, Theo began volunteering at his local fire department. He even logged onto his school classes from the station!
Part of Theo’s volunteer work includes has entailed assisting his town's emergency management agency and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in establishing a vaccine clinic for the town's older residents. He also helps the fire station prepare for storms by making sure gear is ready for response, whether for winter storms, hurricanes, or other disasters. Theo is particularly interested in preparing for, and responding to, wildfires that spread into developed areas. These fires are increasing frequent due to climate change. As a member of the YPC, he would like to learn more about fire danger, as well as about floods and responses to school violence.
After serving for two years on his school’s Student Advisory Committee, Theo was elected by the student body to represent his peers on the school board. Theo is also a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, where he leads up to 70 cadets. He received the Congressional Gold Medal for community service, fitness, exploration, and personal development.
In his free time, Theo participates in cross country and ultimate frisbee varsity sports and enjoys the outdoors.
