Common reasons for individual assistance denial

I have a lot of damage, but I received a letter from FEMA stating I am getting "$0". Why?

Please read the entire letter you received and refer to pages 20-26 of the "Help After a Disaster: Applicant's Guide to the Individuals and Households Program", which was mailed after you registered for assistance. This guide will explain the various reasons for denial of assistance.

The most common denial reasons are:

  • You have insurance to cover the losses;
  • The damages to your home were not caused by the disaster;
  • Your home did not sustain sufficient damages to essential living areas or personal property to qualify for disaster assistance, or
  • Your property is a secondary or vacation home.

If you received your insurance settlement and it does not cover all of your necessary expenses and serious needs, please contact our Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362). If you have a speech disability or hearing loss and use a TTY, call 1-800-427-5593 directly; if you use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362.
