One Week Left for Orange County Residents in N.Y. to Apply for FEMA Assistance

Release Date:
January 24, 2022

Homeowners and renters in Orange County who sustained property damage or loss caused by remnants of Hurricane Ida from Sept. 1-3, 2021 have until Monday, Jan. 31, to apply for federal disaster assistance.

Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses, and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

If you live in Orange County you can apply for disaster assistance, update contact information, ask questions about a letter from FEMA, get information about FEMA home inspections, or learn how to appeal a FEMA decision using the following three resources:

  • Go online at DisasterAssistance.gov;

  • Download the FEMA app; or

  • Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. If you use video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or another service, give FEMA the number for that service. Helpline operators are available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Press 2 for Spanish. Press 3 for an interpreter who speaks your language.

The primary source of federal funding for long-term disaster recovery not covered by insurance is the U.S. Small Business Administration. Orange County residents and business owners who were unable to meet the Jan. 4 SBA application deadline can still apply but must provide a statement on their application explaining they are filing late because the county was a late addition to the major disaster declaration. Disaster loan applications can be accessed through SBA’s secure website: disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/ela/s/. For more information, applicants may call SBA’s Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955. Individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing may call 800-877-8339. For more information, email DisasterCustomerService@SBA.gov.
