Building Codes: The Science that Shows They Work and Why They Are So Important
In honor of National Building Safety Month, the May 11 webinar will bring together experts on building codes to talk about the importance of investing in building codes now, how to communicate successfully about building codes, and why FEMA is encouraging their use throughout its Hazard Mitigation programs. In a world that has seen increasingly more natural disasters from flooding and hurricanes to earthquakes and fires, building codes and awareness of the risks your communities face will make all the difference when disaster strikes.

FEMA Region 5 presents the next webinar in the Strategic Partnerships webinar series. May is Building Safety Month, so we are bringing you three experienced professionals in the area of building codes research, building codes adoption and setting your sights on resilience. Dr. Jiqiu (JQ) Yuan, PE, PhD, PMP, with the National Institute of Building Sciences, and Mr. Ryan M. Colker, J.D., CAE, will speak to what community decision makers should know about building codes and how to build supportive partnerships in the research, public and private sector. Finally, Ms. Chapman-Henderson will bring us examples of campaigns used to convince homeowners that building codes make a difference. She most recently partnered with FEMA to introduce the No Codes, No Confidence campaign that includes a website for homeowners to research the codes used when their homes were built.
