The Barnstead, N.H., fire department purchased a brand new, metallic green fire tanker truck earlier this month with funds from a 2011 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award.
Barnstead’s Fire Chief Mark Tetreault applied for the award to replace the department’s unreliable retrofitted 1954 military surplus tanker truck.
The total cost of the 2012 International Chassis tanker truck was close to $240,00 and 95 percent of the costs were covered by the FEMA grant. The truck is equipped with a 750 gallon per minute pump and a 3,000 gallon water tank which carries more water and has a larger fire pump than the department’s former relic.
Since 1995, Barnstead’s entire Fire-Rescue fleet of trucks has been painted Emerald Green Metallic and is lettered with the timeless words of Kermit the Frog, “It ain’t easy being green.”
