September 3, 2003 - News Release

Washington, D.C. -- Federal disaster funds have been made available for the Florida counties of Dixie and Taylor to help cover part of the response costs for the flooding that began in June, according to the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Michael D. Brown, FEMA Director and Under Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response at Homeland Security, said the counties were designated for the assistance following a review of data gathered by federal and state recovery officials.

August 21, 2003 - News Release

Sarasota, FL -- Pasco County has been added to the list of Florida counties eligible for federal disaster assistance following flooding that occurred in June, federal and state disaster recovery officials announced today. Peter Martinasco, U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), made the designation following a review of additional information regarding damages incurred because of the June flood.

Sarasota, FL -- Torrential rains and flooded streets are not new to Floridians. Such events happen almost every year, and sometime the overflowing creeks and flooded streets are worse than others. These facts probably contribute to a belief common among many Florida property owners - that if such flooding has not hit them in the past so it won't hit them in the future; or if flooding does occur, there is nothing they can do about it. Such thinking is wrong in both cases.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
