Frankfort, KY -- More than $6.5 million in disaster assistance has been approved so far to help Kentuckians hit by the severe storms, floods, mud- and rockslides, and tornadoes of June, federal and state officials said.

Frankfort, KY --The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free Disaster Information Helpline is available to aid those affected by the severe storms, flooding, mud- and rock slides, and tornadoes June 14-27, 2003. Disaster victims who need information about available assistance programs or want to learn about the status of their applications for disaster assistance may call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing- or speech-impaired.

Frankfort, KY -- Nobody can stop a flood. Nobody can erase the bad memories and financial loss. Having flood insurance is the first line-of-defense and can go a long way toward putting the pieces back together. That is the message that state and federal disaster recovery officials are sending to residents of 21 Kentucky counties in the aftermath of the severe storms and flooding of June 14-27. Officials are urging homeowners and renters to purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Individual Assistance - Dollars Approved

Individuals & Household Program (IHP): Provides money and services to people in Presidentially declared disaster areas.

Housing Assistance (HA): Provides assistance for disaster-related housing needs.

Other Needs Assistance (ONA): Provides assistance for other disaster-related needs, such as furnishings, transportation, and medical.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
