May 17, 2002 - News Release

Wise, VA -- Only two weeks remain for Southwest Virginia residents and businesses affected by the floods of March 17-20 to apply for disaster assistance. June 1 is the application deadline for residents and businesses in the counties of Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and the city of Norton. Wythe County is eligible only for Public Assistance (roads, bridges and emergency protective measures). Those who have received U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan applications must also be return them by this deadline.

Wise, VA -- FEMA and the Commonwealth of Virginia continue recovery efforts in eight Southwest Virginia counties and the independent city of Norton that suffered floods in late March. These figures do not include totals for the recently declared disaster covering the floods and severe storms in Tazewell and Buchanan counties

May 1, 2002 - News Release

Wise, VA -- Residents of the Southwest Virginia disaster declaration area have one month from today to register for federal disaster assistance. A presidential disaster declaration on April 2 designated the counties of Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington and Wise and the city of Norton. Wythe County was later added for public assistance only.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
