CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- State and federal officials will establish joint federal/state short-term Disaster Recovery Centers in Cerro Gordo and Mitchell counties, on August 18. They will be located at: Cerro Gordo County Mitchell County Police Training Room City Hall (Downstairs) 78 S. Georgia St. Council Chambers (Old Library) Mason City 806 Main St. Osage The two centers will open to assist applicants on Wednesday, August 18, and remain through Friday, August 20. They will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Emergency management officials are urging Pottawattamie County residents with basements flooded by recent storms to use caution when pumping out. Removing all of the water at once may cause serious structural damage to the house. Draining the water too fast could cause the collapse of the cellar walls, floors, and foundation of the house. The water must be drained slowly to equalize pressure on both sides of the wall.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Disaster Recovery Center in Waterloo will convert to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) workshop after Tuesday, August 10. The center in Waterloo is located in the Black Hawk County Hazmat Training Center, 1925 Newell. The center in Waterloo will remain open until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 10. On Wednesday, August 11, it will become an SBA workshop. The workshop will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until further notice.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Monday, August 9, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will change the hours and days of operation of its toll-free registration and Helpline numbers. Services will be available Monday through Saturday, 8a.m. - 7 p.m. Closed Sunday. All Iowa homeowners, renters, farmers and business owners who sustained damage as result of the severe storms and flooding that began on July 2, regardless of where they live, should register with FEMA for disaster assistance, by calling 1-800-462-9029.
