Leveraging Voluntary Single Property Acquisition to Promote Open Space Preservation

North Carolina’s annual heavy rains cause repetitive flooding to homes in Mecklenburg County.

History

The residences both have a history of flood damage insurance claims due to historic annual heavy rains that cause the need for evacuation due to dangerous flood conditions.

Project Description

Mecklenburg plans to acquire and demolish at-risk residential structures in the Special Flood Hazard Area of Briar Creek. The proposed project consists of voluntary acquisition and demolition of two residences in Charlotte followed by open space preservation. The project will be implemented by staff of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services.
