Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Deadline Extended

Release Date

People interested in applying for assistance through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program should contact their local municipalities or local emergency management agencies. The state requires that all applications be submitted by local governments on behalf of the citizens in their area.

The state of Alabama has extended the deadline for submitting applications for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The new deadline is Oct. 27, 2011.

The state is giving priority to applications for individual and community safe rooms.

Under the terms of the grant program, the state can use five percent of the total grant funds for special initiatives. For these initiative funds, the state is giving priority to applications for sirens, warning systems and backup generators.

Communities are encouraged to apply for any eligible projects they consider to be local priorities.

Because of the catastrophic nature of the April tornadoes in Alabama, the state extended the HMGP application deadline to Oct. 27. State officials want as many people as possible to benefit from the grant program.

For more information, people should contact local emergency management or other government authorities.
