Immediate Benefits from AFG Micro Grant For Large Diameter Hose

Scotland, Conn. - The Scotland Volunteer Fire Department, located in rural eastern Connecticut, received a 2016 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award in the amount of $ 17,572 to purchase 3,000 feet of new 5-inch large diameter hose replacing 20 years old hose on their hose tender.

Exactly one week after loading the new hose onto their hose tender, it was requested on a mutual aid response to the City of Willimantic Connecticut, to assist in fighting a major industrial fire that destroyed a 100,000 square foot recycling facility. The fire broke out at 10:13 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 in the building that housed Willimantic Waste Paper Co.’s garbage and construction debris operations. The plant contained a 50-ton stockpile of wood and plaster debris. The fire, originally called in as a two-alarm blaze, quickly escalated to three, and then four, alarms. Fourteen companies from surrounding towns responded to the fire, which spewed a column of black smoke so high into the air it registered on the weather radar of local TV stations.

According to Lt. Kevin Ring, Scotland Volunteer firefighters responded with their hose tender and were assigned to make two separate large diameter hose lays; a 1,500 foot lay from the rear of a neighboring industrial property; and an 800 foot lay on the opposite side of the facility from a fence line to a yard hydrant in another neighboring industrial facility.  These hose lays were critical water supply components which were crucial to the overall fire department operations at this major fire incident.

Without the support of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, the Scotland Volunteer Firefighters could not have acquired the large diameter hose that played such a significant role in this fire.
