Janice is a 12th grade student from Michigan. She comes to the YPC with an interest in teaching people about the importance of disaster planning and a passion for spreading this message among underserved communities and other young people.
As an active member of the FEMA Region 5 YPC, Janice has already begun to work with young students experiencing mild cognitive impairments. She helps them create emergency kits and teaches them about in-depth safety measures. In addition, she is developing social media graphics and messaging to promote safety tips through her local library’s teen Instagram page. She hopes her time on the national YPC will give her an opportunity expand her preparedness efforts to a national audience.
In addition to her preparedness work, Janice is president of the Key Club, a student-led club that focuses on providing service, building character, and developing leaders. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the International Cultures Club. She has also organized blood drives and fundraisers at her school. Outside of school, Janice enjoys being involved in different facets of her community, from serving on the Teen Advisory Board of her local library to volunteering at a local hospital and serving as an active parishioner and lecturer at her church.
Janice enjoys playing sports, reading mystery novels, and traveling. She is also bilingual in English and Malayalam, a south Indian language.
