Acting Associate Administrator for External Affairs

Mr. Hitt joined FEMA in 2021 and has served as the Deputy Associate Administrator of the Office of External Affairs (OEA). In this role, Mr. Hitt led all aspects of FEMA’s external engagement, including with the public, the media, Congress, intergovernmental partners, and the non-profit and private sectors. His experience includes directing ESF-15 on every major disaster since 2021, including the COVID-19 vaccine mission, Hurricanes Ida, Ian, Helene, Milton, and the Maui Fires. Mr. Hitt has extensive experience in risk and crisis communications, federal coordination as well as managing complex organizations developed over nearly two decades in the federal government. Prior to joining FEMA, he held roles at the U.S. Department of Commerce, OMB, the U.S. Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking, and the U.S. Senate.
