Section 1206 of the Disaster Recovery Reform Act of 2018 (DRRA) (2018) authorizes FEMA to provide communities with the resources to administer and enforce building code and floodplain management ordinances following a major disaster declaration through FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) Program.

Mississippians who applied for assistance from FEMA after Hurricane Ida should stay in touch with the agency to update application details with any new information. It is critical to keep FEMA advised. Missing or outdated material could delay your getting help.

Residents of Dickson, Hickman, Houston and Humphreys counties, impacted by severe storms and flooding on Aug. 21, were eligible to apply for federal disaster assistance through FEMA’s Individual Assistance program for disaster-related repair and replacement and other needs grants from Aug. 23 to Oct. 25, 2021.

If you have applied for FEMA assistance after suffering damage or loss directly from Hurricane Ida, you may have received a loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration. You don’t have to accept an SBA loan. However, you could be leaving money on the table if you are asked to apply, and you don’t complete and submit the application.

If you applied for FEMA disaster assistance after Hurricane Ida, you might have already received a determination letter by regular mail or email. Read that letter very carefully.

With the deadline to apply for federal disaster assistance only seven days away, New Yorkers who had losses or damage from Hurricane Ida should keep in mind that FEMA provides financial assistance to eligible individuals and households who have uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses as a result of the storm. FEMA assistance is not a substitute for insurance and cannot compensate for all losses caused by the disaster.

FEMA will suspend operations at the three remaining fixed Disaster Recovery Centers in New York Thursday in observation of Thanksgiving. The FEMA Helpline will also be closed for the holiday. All three centers and the Helpline resume operations Friday, Nov. 26.
