Fake or unlicensed contractors may try to take advantage of Georgia residents who suffered property damage from Hurricane Idalia on Aug. 30, 2023. Homeowners need to hire contractors who are authorized to do the work, will complete the work, and will do a good job.

If you receive a letter from FEMA and you disagree with FEMA’s decision about your eligibility, or with the amount of grant money you have received from the agency, you have a right to appeal the decision. Read your eligibility letter carefully. In many cases, FEMA might just need more information to continue processing your application.

FEMA has approved two direct housing programs for Maui County survivors. For each program, FEMA will work with property management companies that act on behalf of the government and contract with property owners of rental units. The units are offered to survivors for up to 18 months. Maui County, the State of Hawaii, FEMA and the private sector are seeking owners of rental units suitable for families and individuals for either program.

If you are a resident of Jackson and Jasper counties who applied for FEMA assistance for recovery from the June tornadoes, you will get a letter from FEMA. If that letter states “Assistance Not Approved,” take the time to understand why. A “no” may become a “yes.”

FEMA Individual Assistance helps disaster survivors begin recovery by providing grants for basic, critical needs. FEMA assistance is not a substitute for insurance, nor can it duplicate other sources of assistance.
