Recovering from one disaster can mean being better prepared for the next. That’s why FEMA offers a variety of assistance programs before, during, and after a disaster. Here are some answers to common questions about how you and FEMA can work together to reduce hazards to your life and property.

Residents affected by the Gray and Oregon Road Wildfires in Spokane County should register for FEMA assistance even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate benefits, which means the agency can’t pay for damage covered by another source. However, unmet needs not covered by any other source of recovery assistance could still be addressed by FEMA.

Homeowners and renters in San Diego County who had damage or losses caused by the Jan. 21-23, 2024, severe storm and flooding may apply for FEMA disaster assistance. The deadline to apply is April 19, 2024.

Individuals and Households Program (IHP) provides financial assistance and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by disaster who have uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs.

FEMA implemented the most significant updates to disaster assistance in the last 20 years. These updates apply to Presidentially declared disasters on or after March 22, 2024.

Remember to spend FEMA assistance funds only for specified disaster-related expenses. As you start to receive funds for rental assistance, home repairs, or other categories of assistance, be assured federal disaster assistance funds are tax-free. FEMA’s notification letter will inform you of the appropriate use of disaster assistance funds. You are expected to use assistance funds only for their intended purpose. Not doing so can compromise future assistance eligibility.
