Volunteer services are used throughout all of FEMA’s National Preparedness efforts. During disasters, volunteer programs are initiated in small neighborhoods where communities can work together to rebuild their neighborhoods, help and support each other and to develop neighborhoods based on their interest and needs.
In 2008, President Obama encouraged all young people to volunteer through United We Serve, which encourages all Americans to volunteer in their community. FEMA partners with the Citizen Corps and United We Serve to provide opportunities for federal employees to get involved in their communities to support local emergency responders, disaster relief, and community safety in the event they don’t have any one special non-profit in mind or located within their neighborhoods.
Volunteer Community Services activities at FEMA are in full swing all year. The Office of the Chief Component Human Capital Officer Worklife Programs promotes and markets volunteer services for employees. In addition, we facilitate the Presidential Awards process for FEMA employees who are volunteering based on the total number of hours earned for volunteering. We encourage all employees who can find the time to engage in their Volunteer Community Services programs by clicking on www.serve.gov. The United We Serve website will assist you with finding a volunteer opportunity or plan a neighborhood preparedness project. By clicking on www.serve.gov you can begin to: (1) identify local resources; (2) build a team; (3) set goals; (4) serve your community; and (5) record and share successes.
As always we recommend you keep track of your volunteer service hours, as well as share stories about your experiences. By registering at the President’s Service Award Website you can track your hours using the following guidelines.
- When registering use the Record of Service Key LSM-22515. If you have already registered, you can add this key by updating your Profile.
- Go to the "Groups" tab and join one of the following groups by typing your group code (below) and clicking, "Join Group."
