Public Works/ Roads and Bridges Texas roads, bridges and public works took a very hard hit from Hurricane Rita. $20.1 million has been obligated for Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative to restore the transmission and distribution system damages. The Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative utilized 900 contract personnel and equipment to replace approximately 3,000 power poles, and 3,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines. Repairs were also made to the electronic meter reading system. This funding expedited and facilitated the restoration of electrical services to thousands of residents. The Trinity River Authority has completed repairs to the Livingston Dam, damaged by Hurricane Rita’s wind and wave action. As a result of the storm, lumber, timbers, logs and other debris were deposited on the dam face and severe erosion of the embankment protection occurred. FEMA funded $7.7 Million for repairs to this dam. More than $75.8 million has been obligated (paid to the state) by FEMA for the repair of public utilities, water control facilities and roads and bridges as a result of Hurricane Rita.
