Health/Hospitals: In the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the public health of evacuees and Texas communities became an important concern. Hospitals, medical facilities, pharmacies and medical providers all pitched in and provided health care and supplies to protect the public. Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers evacuated people from Southeast Texas, and provided triage at area shelters, including the Astrodome in Houston, TX. Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas sustained roof and interior building damage during Hurricane Rita. Additional damage to the mechanical and electrical systems also prevented the hospital from providing critical medical service to their community. With the assistance of FEMA funding in the amount of $6.5 million, Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas has been able to repair its building damage and start providing services to the community once again. Mitigation funding to secure the roof system and all parts of the building as well a generator quick disconnect was also provided to this applicant. FEMA has obligated (paid to the state) over $18 million dollars in disaster aid to the State of Texas for Health and Hospital activities.
