Historic or Cultural Resources When 140 mph winds of Hurricane Katrina blew in from the Gulf of Mexico, many cultural and historic resources in the area were hard hit. With more than a thousand sites listed on the Alabama Historic Register, it’s clear that citizens of the state take great pride in their historic and cultural facilities. One special resource is the battleship USS Alabama located in Mobile Bay. During the storm it was shifted from its mooring by heavy waves and a storm surge that also displaced massive military tanks displayed nearby. In addition, approximately a third of Alabama’s 22 state parks received major damage. Most of the worst damage was in the coastal counties of Baldwin and Mobile. In addition to the $1.7 million that has been obligated for the USS Alabama project, FEMA has obligated (paid to the state) over $41 million to assist in the repair and restoration for Alabama state parks and facilities. Alabama has disbursed approximately $960,000 to its cultural and historic applicants.
