"Our lawmakers are a critical part of our nation's emergency management team, a team that includes state and local officials, the private sector, non-profit and voluntary organizations, and most importantly—the public." One way lawmakers can help encourage personal and community preparedness is by placing FEMA widgets on their congressional websites that explain how constituents can apply for disaster assistance and share other helpful resources. New congressional offices can learn how to install the widgets here: http://www.fema.gov/help/widgets/. FEMA also runs a public awareness campaign, the Ready campaign, which provides basic steps that anyone can take to prepare their families, homes and businesses for disasters. Visit www.ready.gov to learn more. FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from and mitigate all hazards.
