Housing Update: Katrina/Rita: 580 occupied units Gustav/Ike: 201 occupied units Recent Obligations: More than $21.8 million was recently obligated for 12 recovery projects in Louisiana. A few of the projects include: October 23 to October 29, 2010 Events Groundbreaking Ceremony in Lake Charles The Southwest Louisiana Entrepreneurial & Economic Development Center (SEED) broke ground on October 27. The event was sponsored by McNeese State University, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, the City of Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance. The center houses facilities for developing businesses; McNeese Small Business Development Center offices; conference and training rooms; and classrooms and faculty offices for the school. Federal Government and Internship Fair On October 27, the New Orleans Federal Executive Board and Xavier University Office of Career Services sponsored “Federal Government 101” at Xavier University. Federal employees, hiring managers and human resource professionals provided information about vacancy announcements, the federal hiring process, the USAJOBS Web site and tips on resume development. National Emergency Managers Association’s Conference FEMA leaders recently met with state emergency managers during the National Emergency Management Association's Annual Conference in Little Rock, Ark. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate urged attending state officials to incorporate the needs and capabilities of the entire community, including children and people with disabilities, when planning for disaster response and recovery. FEMA and American Red Cross to co-lead Mass Care Efforts FEMA and the American Red Cross recently signed a new Memorandum of Agreement to co-lead the planning and coordination of mass care services during a disaster response. By sharing the lead role, FEMA and the Red Cross will work together to assist State and non-governmental organization partners as they plan for, and coordinate, mass care services.
