Louisiana Recovery Office New Orleans, LA FEMA: Week in Review October 07, 2011 Announcements Calendar FEMA Disaster Relief Fund Update In August, to ensure FEMA had the resources needed to continue to provide assistance to individual disaster survivors, as well as support our state partners in their response to future disasters, FEMA placed funding restrictions on longer-term repair, rebuilding and mitigation projects from previous and current disasters funded by the Disaster Relief Fund. This “immediate needs funding” has been used in previous years to help preserve our Disaster Relief Fund so we can continue to meet the immediate needs of individuals and communities affected by disasters. Today, because Congress has appropriated additional resources for our Disaster Relief Fund, we can announce that we are lifting those funding restrictions and once again providing funds for longer-term recovery projects. This will include providing funds for projects that were placed on hold since August. FEMA is in the process of working with our state and local partners to move these projects forward again. The National Preparedness Goal is the first deliverable called for by Presidential Policy Directive (PPD) 8 and was signed by the Secretary of Homeland Security on September 23, 2011. The National Preparedness Goal sets the vision for preparedness nationwide and identifies the core capabilities and capability targets necessary to achieve that vision across the five mission areas: prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery. The first edition of the National Preparedness Goal builds extensively on prior work of various stakeholder groups from around the nation, draws upon lessons learned from past large-scale and catastrophic events and represents input from preparedness partners from all levels of government, non-profit organizations, the private sector and individuals. The input and ideas developed through working groups, outreach sessions, and a two-week national review period was critical to shaping this document. FEMA wishes to thank those who were able to take the time to review and provide comments. The National Preparedness System description is due November 24, 2011.
