While existing statewide Programmatic Agreements (PAs) in Louisiana and Mississippi address general Historic Preservation compliance activities that can be applied to FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, the unprecedented nature of the situation following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita warrant more tailored and efficient processes that address the unique situation of the 404 HMGP program undertakings. Applications for HMGP funding for residential, commercial, public, and private nonprofit properties are submitted through the state. Over 38,000 properties have been approved through the Section 106 review process which is required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and are eligible for funding. These results have been forwarded to the state. Groundbreaking for Plaquemines Parish High School FEMA, state and local leaders break ground at the new site of Plaquemines Parish High School. Department of Homeland Security Fellows FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Russell and GOHSEP Deputy Director, Mark Riley, speak to a group of visiting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Fellows. The presentation was set-up as a panel discussion. The theme focused on the importance of “Building Partnerships”, and the recovery that has been accomplished over the last few years in Louisiana. The DHS Fellows program is a transformational development experience with a concentration on leadership and management challenges. FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
