Landry High School A dedication ceremony was held August 5th for the newly constructed, 214,014 square foot L.B. Landry High School in Orleans Parish. The three-story flagship high school utilized $61.5 million through a consolidation of alternate damaged facilities. This process is designed to better meet the community’s needs following Katrina. Louisiana Municipal Association Conference Louisiana Municipal Association 73rd Annual Conference (Aug. 5 - 7) is currently being held in downtown New Orleans. This year’s theme for the LMA is “Cities Mean Business,” as the 2010 conference is aimed at encouraging new and stronger collaboration between local elected leaders and the business community. Their purpose will be to reinforce strong cities that act as economic engines and help to drive the state’s competitiveness.  Haitian and South and Central Asia Delegations Delegations from Haiti and South and Central Asia visited various agencies (including the Red Cross, the New Orleans Office of Emergency Preparedness, Global Green, Bayou Bienvenue, Habitat for Humanity and FEMA) to learn about urban environmental planning challenges, post-earthquake reconstruction approaches, crisis management responsibilities, and the role of national and international voluntary organizations.     Individual Assistance In response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, FEMA has assisted 1,498,722 disaster survivors with some form of housing assistance totaling over $5.2 billion. FEMA conducted the largest temporary housing operation in the history of the country providing temporary housing units (THUs) to 143,123 households throughout the Gulf Coast. To date, 740 Louisiana households remain in temporary housing units provided for hurricanes Katrina and Rita. An additional 237 Louisiana households occupy mobile homes and park models provided following hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
