August 5, 2011 Announcements FEMA Awards More Funding For Plaquemines Medical Facility FEMA recently awarded more than $7.9 million in additional public assistance funding to the Plaquemines Medical Center Hospital Service District #1 for their post-Katrina consolidated hospital project. With this grant, FEMA has now provided more than $24.6 million for the new hospital’s construction, which will combine medical services from two, pre-Katrina facilities—Plaquemines’ Medical Hospital and Medical Human Resources Annex building. Once completed, Plaquemines Parish will have a new, three-story facility in Port Sulphur. The two original buildings were destroyed during the storm. The Plaquemines Medical Center Hospital Service District #1 got approval from FEMA to allow the buildings’ replacement funding to be used to construct the new combined medical facility. “Without FEMA’s assistance, the construction of our new medical facility would not be possible,” said Jimmy Cappiello, board chairman of the Plaquemines Medical Center Hospital Service District #1. The new $7.9 million grant will pay for additional square footage for elevators, stairs and circulation space to comply with safety rules, as well as elevating the new hospital to meet minimum requirements under National Flood Insurance Program regulations. New Orleans Volunteer Group To Assist With Evacuation For the past two months, a volunteer group in New Orleans has been training to help the city with the evacuation of thousands of residents in case of a major hurricane. Evacuteer.org, which was established in 2009, recruits, trains and manages evacuation volunteers to assist the New Orleans’ public evacuation plan called the City Assisted Evacuation Plan (CAEP). The CAEP activates when a mandatory evacuation is called in the city and is designed to move 25,000-30,000 residents who do not have their own transportation. Through an existing agreement with the City of New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP), the city has authorized evacuteer.org to manage all volunteers who work within the CAEP at 17 neighborhood pick-up points, as well as to assist with hotline operations at City Hall, during an evacuation. Thus far, more than 200 volunteers have trained with evacuteer.org, which has been assisted by other volunteers from Tulane University in developing its Contacts News Desk: (504) 762-2477 External Affairs Director, Andrea Davis: (504) 247-6628 / Andrea.Davis1@dhs.gov IGA and Congressional Affairs Lead, Lynette Fontenot: (504) 232-8602/ Lynette.Fontenot@dhs.gov F E M A evacuation plan.
