April 9-15, 2011 Announcements FEMA Helps New Orleans Healthcare Nonprofit Replace Lost Supplies FEMA has obligated $400,000 to the New Orleans Health Corporation for contents damaged during Hurricane Katrina at two of its clinic locations where the nonprofit corporation leased space prior to the storm. The NOHC will use the funding to replace medical and office equipment supplies damaged or destroyed during the storm. “The mission of the NOHC is to provide quality healthcare to New Orleans’ lower income population,” said FEMA’s Louisiana Recovery Office Deputy Director of Programs Andre Cadogan. “This grant further helps the nonprofit to carry out such vital services by assisting them to return to their full pre-Katrina capacity.” Specifically, FEMA’s recent grant comes as an “improved project,” enabling the nonprofit agency to consolidate contents lost at the two pre-Katrina clinic sites into one larger recovery project versus individual ones. FEMA’s approach – allowing applicants to consolidate funding to best meet their post-Katrina rebuilding needs – was first developed and utilized by the agency in 2007. The more progressive and forward leaning federal assistance policies give public assistance applicants the ability to maximize grant dollars when rebuilding, and to replace damaged contents in a more efficient and flexible manner. Assistance to Firefighters Grants Now on FEMA.gov FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program's (AFG) has a new website address on FEMA.gov to allow first responders to access information to apply for all AFG grants. The transition to the new Web site occurred on April 1. All applications for FEMA's fire grant programs including the AFG, the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants, Fire Prevention and Safety Grants and information on the Assistance to Firefighters Station Con struction Grants can now be found on FEMA.gov/firegrants. To date, FEMA has obligated approximately $6 billion in Public Assistance funding for Katrina and Rita related recovery work throughout the City of New Orleans. Be Prepared FEMA’s Community and Family Preparedness website provides an ex cellent source of informa tion to prepare for disas ters. In addition to finding out about your commu nity’s plan, it is important that you know what plans are in place for your workplace and your chil dren’s school or day care center. FEMA has been working to make all information more easily accessible and more user friendly for first responders and having two different web portals was not a convenient manner in which to locate information. All fire grants program documents, awards announcements, grants management workshops, success stories and program application reports and statistics will now be available from FEMA.gov. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources need to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
