FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) has funded the majority of the improvements, providing over $7.4 million in mitigation grants. These projects include installing two new 48-inch pumps, increasing the facility’s size to accommodate the pumps, installing a hoist lift system and adding bar screen cleaners to prevent debris buildup. To date, FEMA has approved nearly $17.8 million in HMGP grants to fund improvements at eight pump stations throughout St. Charles Parish. The projects will reduce the risk of future flooding events by increasing the conveyance of water away from populated areas. HMGP provides grants to states and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration.
