NOAA Public Alert Radio Program 

As some of you may have heard already, this week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric 
Administration (NOAA), the Department of Education, and the Department of Homeland Security 
are partnering to launch a significant nationwide project to distribute 80,000 NOAA Public Alert 
Radios to every U.S. public school. The distribution is the national rollout of a successful 2005 pilot 
program conducted in two states and 20 Urban Areas. 

We hope Citizen Corps Councils in your state will take advantage of this opportunity by reaching 
out to their school districts and offering assistance with setting up and testing the radios. By 
volunteering their support, state, local, tribal and territorial Citizen Corps Councils have a great 
opportunity to help ensure that our nation’s public schools have early warnings of local hazards. For 
more information on the program, please see the attached documents, which include a support 
request to all of our Councils, along with information for volunteers who choose to participate in the 
Public Alert Radio initiative. The National Office of Citizen Corps will be distributing these 
documents to all of our Councils by Friday of this week.
