Investigations conducted by FEMA and other organizations after major coastal disasters have consistently shown that properly sited, well-designed, and well-constructed coastal residential buildings generally perform well. This updated Coastal Construction Manual—prepared by FEMA with assistance from other agencies, organizations, and professionals involved in coastal construction and regulation—is intended to help designers and contractors identify and evaluate practices that will improve the quality of construction in coastal areas and reduce the economic losses associated with coastal disasters.
