HAZUS Training and Conference e-mail updates
Regularly scheduled HAZUS training classes are held at FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI) located on the the National Emergency Training Center campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland, 75 miles north of Washington, DC.
Courses provide instruction in all steps of the loss estimation process, from inventory verification and improvement to running a loss analysis; how to use HAZUS results for mitigation, as well as for comprehensive planning, response, and recovery activities; data management; and useful GIS concepts. Emergency managers, GIS specialists, geologists, state and local planners, consultants, and all those involved in risk assessment activities benefit from HAZUS training. A seminar on HAZUS-MH for Decision Makers provides an overview of HAZUS-MH capabilities for anyone interested in preparing for and dealing with natural disasters, including elected officials, planners, public health and public safety, engineering and economic development departments, academics, and insurance and utility representatives. The seminar demonstrates the application’s flood, earthquake, and hurricane models and discusses the types of analysis options and output formats that can be derived from each model.
A free training seminar, HAZUS-MH for Decision Makers, is available for viewing at any time on the ESRI Virtual Campus web site. Download HAZUS-MH for Decision Makers Seminar handout.
FEMA has completed a major update of the Comprehensive Data Management for HAZUS-MH course that integrates the powerful new data integration tools available in HAZUS-MH MR2.
The course focuses on the HAZUS-MH inventory. It includes an in-depth discussion of the methodologies that were used to develop and compile the HAZUS-MH provided inventory and identifies the issues associated with using that inventory for purposes other than that those for which it is intended. A significant portion of the course is devoted to exploring a variety of strategies and techniques for updating both the site specific and aggregate inventory with local data.
The course is recommended for GIS analysts, database administrators, and other professionals who are responsible for integrating local data into the HAZUS-MH database structure. It will help students effectively prepare for their own data integration projects by identifying those inventory elements that have the most impact on the estimation of losses for flood, earthquake, and hurricane analysis. Numerous hands-on exercises are completed during the course.
Comprehensive Data Management for HAZUS-MH represents a major milestone in the HAZUS-MH education program. The curriculum now includes eight courses that range from introductory to advanced. Courses enable students to efficiently integrate their own local data into HAZUS-MH which significantly improves the performance and outputs of the model.
The course was successfully piloted at the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) in Emmitsburg, Maryland from September 10-13, 2006. The next Comprehensive Data Management for HAZUS-MH at EMI is currently scheduled for September 17-20, 2007.
