HAZUS Case Studies: Helena, Montana Implements HAZUS for Potential Earthquake Risks and Losses

A future earthquake in Lewis and Clark County can cause major damage according to seismicity studies at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. Due to the likelihood of another local earthquake event, the City of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, and the State of Montana implemented HAZUS.

Risks to the community were assessed in terms on potential hazards, vulnerability of the population and infrastructure, and costs associated with physical and economic damages or destruction. Natural hazards of particular interest for the City of Helena and vicinity are susceptible soils and liquefaction. Depth to groundwater and local geology are important factors affecting potential impacts to population and structures at the time of an earthquake event.
