HAZUS-MH FAQs: Earthquake Model Hazard/Scenario Definition

Can HAZUS generate probable maximum losses (PML)?

PML, which are commonly defined as the 90% percentile losses, are not what HAZUS produces.  HAZUS results are the expected average or 50% percentile losses.  The reason for this is that HAZUS does not now estimate the uncertainty of the results, which would have permitted generation of PML.  Nevertheless, you can run several meaningful sensitivity analyses that permit you to "stress test" various key parameters and compile the results from these different "what-if" simulations.  This exercise should permit you to quantify the variability of results under different assumptions.
