Duration effects are considered in the damage models through the kappa factor. An earthquake with a moment magnitude equal to or less than 5.5 is considered to be an earthquake of short duration whereas an earthquake with a moment magnitude equal to or greater than 7.5 is considered to be an earthquake of long duration. All other earthquakes are considered to be of moderate duration.
