HAZUS-MH MR3 FAQs: Earthquake Model Analysis Parameters

What is the technical basis for determining building damage for a given earthquake event in HAZUS?

Determining building damage in HAZUS is based on a vulnerability function represented in three graphs.

  1. The building pushover curve, which represents building structural characteristics.
  2. The damped response spectrum, which represents ground acceleration and deformation.
  3. The fragility curve, which represents the damage expected for the given behavior of a model building type.

Overlaying the pushover curve on the response spectrum provides two values for the expected behavior of the building. These two values are then used as the input into the fragility function to determine the damage state probability.
