HAZUS-MH FAQs: Earthquake Model Analysis Parameters

What are the underlying assumptions in HAZUS for assigning the different default seismic design level for the regions in the U.S.?

The assignment of a seismic design level is strictly based on the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) classification of U.S. counties. If a county has a:

NEHRP classification of 1, 2, 3, or 4, the seismic design level is assumed to be "low."
NEHRP class of 5 or 6, the seismic design level is assumed to be "moderate."
NEHRP class equal to 7, then the seismic design level is assumed to be "high."

In addition, building quality parameters have been combined with seismic design levels to produce a complete design level as indicated below:

High - Code
Moderate - Code
Low - Code
Pre - Code
Special High - Code
Special Moderate - Code
Special Low - Code
