Earthquake Information for Public Policy Makers and Planners

Below are links to information of use to decision makers and planners involved in developing, approving, and implementing earthquake- or disaster-related policies in the public and private sectors. Use these resources to help make the social and built environments more resistant to the potentially dangerous and damaging effects of earthquakes.

• Publications
  Browse and access FEMA publications that describe earthquake risk-reduction mechanisms (e.g., building rehabilitation programs, seismic building codes, seismic safety advisory boards, earthquake insurance) and how they can be or have been created and promoted at federal, state, or local levels. More than half of these publications can be downloaded online, and others can be ordered in print or on compact disc.
  
  
• Training
  FEMA offers training and technical assistance focused on earthquake risk reduction, particularly on identifying and mitigating seismic hazards in the built environment. Other FEMA training addresses mitigation, preparedness, and response subjects that are applicable to earthquakes and other hazards.

  Learn about two of the most important strategies for mitigating earthquake risks, the adoption and enforcement of up-to-date building codes and the seismic retrofitting of vulnerable structures.
