Earthquake Information for Businesses and Other Organizations

Below are links to earthquake-related information of use to employers and employees. There are many things that organizations can do to reduce the chances that earthquakes will injure employees, customers, or other workplace visitors, damage workplaces, or jeopardize the survival of the organization. Use the following resources to help make your business or organization and your community more resistant to the potentially dangerous and damaging effects of earthquakes.

• Safety at Work
  Learn about what to do at work before, during, and after earthquakes. Topics include how to strengthen your facilities and secure their contents, how to help build disaster resilience in your community, and how to prepare your workforce to react safely, help the organization survive, and care for their homes and families.
  
  
• QuakeSmart
  Learn how to assess your organization's seismic risks and how to develop and implement a plan to cost-effectively mitigate those risks. This FEMA program is reaching out to businesses located in seismically at-risk communities through an informative web site, through partnerships with local chambers of commerce, and through QuakeSmart-sponsored events to inform and engage businesses in effective, ongoing earthquake preparedness and mitigation activities.
  
  
• Publications
  FEMA offers a variety of earthquake-related information resources, ranging from reports, handbooks, guides, and manuals to posters, software, web-based tools, and instructional materials. Browse and access these resources; many publications can be downloaded online, and others can be ordered in print or on compact disc.
  
  
• Training
  FEMA offers training and technical assistance focused on earthquake risk reduction, particularly on identifying and mitigating seismic hazards in the built environment. Other FEMA training addresses mitigation, preparedness, and response subjects that are applicable to earthquakes and other hazards.
  
  
• Building Codes
  Learn about two of the most important strategies for mitigating earthquake risks, the adoption and enforcement of up-to-date building codes and the seismic retrofitting of vulnerable structures.
