The southern part of Plaquemines Parish is a sparsely settled narrow corridor where maritime and oil-gas industries dominate along the Mississippi River and adjacent coastal wetlands. It is an area where jobs, population and recreation activities are highly dependant on the exceptional water resources and transport channels. Widespread sport fishing and commercial fishing activities contribute to the area's economic vitality, including suppliers, marinas, seafood processing and other support businesses.
The Plaquemines Medical Services Center District 1 facility suffered damage from the storm surge and coastal inundation associated with Hurricane Katrina. The applicant is proposing demolishing the existing facility and constructing a new facility in an alternate location.
Plaquemines Parish is proposing to demolish and remove the damaged, 5600 square foot Boothville-Venice Community Center. The funding for this facility is will be used for a consolidated facility that will be located on a different site which has not been selected.
