Insider Notes
Overall
- Cash and a good map are the first survival tools you will need.
- A cell phone is becoming indispensable. Remember the charger!
- A small cache of snacks goes far from traveling to late night work.
- Network. You need to know a lot about a lot of things. Find several sources/mentors.
From the Field
Packing
- Bring an empty suitcase. Your clothing might not match the work you are doing. The extra space carries new clothes and souvenirs.
- Be prepared to replace clothes. Depending how close you are to the disaster, shoes may not last.
Work Environment
- Jobs and bosses change. Find out what you need to do, who can show you how to do it, and, when your new boss arrives, what their priorities are – return to “Find out….”
From Offices
Lodging
- Stay close when you start. You can move later if you learn of other options which you might prefer.
- Stretch your dollars. Some hotels include breakfast, dinner, and happy hour.
