The IPAWS Program Management Office (PMO) will work with organizations representing older Americans to educate them on the alerts and warning tools available through the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). The Emergency Alert System (EAS), which has historically provided alert and warnings through broadcast television and radio, cable, satellite, and wireline communications pathways, will continue as one of many public alert and warning systems. The IPAWS PMO recognizes that the EAS is a critical component in alerting the American people and is working to modernize and expand the EAS, as well as integrate a suite of other alerting and warning technologies.
IPAWS will enable the President, Federal (most notably NOAA’s National Weather Service), State, territorial, tribal, and local emergency communication officials to simultaneously access multiple communications pathways to create and activate alerts and warnings related to any hazard impacting public safety and communicate to the American people before, during, and after a disaster for the purpose of saving lives and protecting property.
