Shiawassee County Flood Risk Open House To Take Place Nov. 30
The general public is invited to view the floodplain maps and see the risk of flooding

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, will host a flood risk information open house on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Caledonia Township Hall, 135 N. State Road in Owosso, Mich. Newly released preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps will be displayed so residents can learn about their risk of flooding and how this will affect their lives and property. Those interested may drop in at any time during the event to discuss mapping issues with MDEQ representatives.
“Everyone is at some risk of flooding,” said Janet M. Odeshoo, acting regional administrator of FEMA Region V in Chicago. “People in Shiawassee County need to know what that risk is so they can make informed decisions about their safety and financial investments.”
Some residents may be required to purchase flood insurance once local communities adopt these maps. Federal banking regulations require the purchase of flood insurance for federally insured mortgages in high-risk flood areas. Once effective, these maps will be used to determine flood risk, develop mitigation measures, and encourage wise and responsible risk management decision-making. Property owners, realtors, lenders and insurance agents are urged to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about flood risk and hazard mitigation within their community.
