RALEIGH, N.C. -- Those who lost work because of Hurricane Irene have only a few more days to seek disaster unemployment assistance. The North Carolina Employment Security Commission can pay benefits for work that was lost beginning the week of Sept. 3.
The deadline to apply varies by county:
- Sept. 30-Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico and Tyrrell counties
- Oct. 3-Halifax and Lenoir counties
- Oct. 5-Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Hertford, Johnston, Jones, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Vance, Warren, Washington and Wilson counties
- Oct. 11-Pender and Wayne counties
Those who may apply include self-employed persons, farm owners, agricultural workers and others not usually covered under regular unemployment insurance programs. Learn more by calling the NCESC at 866-795-8877.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
