COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Residents of Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Holt, Lafayette and Platte counties have less than two weeks to apply for federal disaster aid.
The deadline for survivors of the recent flooding from June 1 to Aug. 1, 2011, to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and with the U.S. Small Business Administration is Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011.
To date, more than $2.4 million in federal grants and loans has been approved for assistance to more than 700 flood survivors.
Applicants may register for assistance or check the status of their registration by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). If the applicant has a speech disability or hearing loss and uses a TTY, call 1-800-462-7585 directly; if the applicant uses 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362. FEMA phone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Multilingual operators are available. Registration may also be completed online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by smartphone at m.fema.gov.
Assistance may include FEMA grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest SBA disaster loans to cover losses not fully covered by insurance, and other programs to help homeowners, renters, business owners and nonprofit organizations recover from the effects of the disaster.
Survivors are also urged to complete and return the SBA low-interest disaster loan application they might receive after registering with FEMA. Applications are available from Disaster Recovery Centers and online at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.
The SBA can help homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofits with loans up to $200,000 to repair or replace real estate, and $40,000 to repair or replace personal property damages, including automobiles. The interest rate of disaster loans for homeowners and renters may be as low as 2.688 percent, with terms up to 30 years, making repayment affordable. Business owners may obtain business loans up to $2 million for physical and/or economic injury to a business.
