NEPTUNE, N.J. -- More than $81.5 million in federal disaster assistance is helping fund the ways New Jerseyans are recovering from Hurricane Irene.
"We're getting aid out there as quickly as possible to everyone who is eligible for it," said William L. Vogel, federal coordinating officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) and FEMA announce the following summary of assistance as of Sept. 19:
- 50,906 individuals have registered with FEMA for disaster assistance, averaging more than 2,679 per day.
- More than $76.8 million in disaster assistance for housing in 16 days.
- More than $4.6 million in Other Needs Assistance for other necessary expenses and serious needs (i.e. personal property, transportation, medical and dental expenses, funeral and burial expenses)
- Disaster Recovery Centers are open in all New Jersey counties. To find the one nearest you, visit asd.fema.gov/inter/locator/home.htm.
"Registering is the first step," said State Coordinating Officer Lt. Paul Miller of NJOEM. "Do it now and get into the system."
There are three ways to register - go to www.disasterassistance.gov, m.fema.gov or call FEMA toll-free, 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Those with access or functional needs and who use a TTY may call 800-462-7585 or use 711 or Video Relay Service to call 800-621-3362. Telephone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET; multilingual operators are available.
